Vacation Bible School
Some of the strongest foundations in life are built when children discover that they are known, loved, and welcomed by God.
That’s what Vacation Bible School is all about.
Beginning Sunday, August 2, through Sunday, August 23, children are invited to participate in VBS during our 10:30 AM worship service. Each week offers an engaging, interactive environment where kids explore God’s Word through Bible lessons, activities, conversation, and friendship.
Our hope is simple: that every child leaves with a deeper understanding of who God is, a growing relationship with Jesus, and the confidence to share His love with friends and family.
Whether your child has grown up in church or is hearing these stories for the very first time, they’ll find a welcoming place to learn, ask questions, and experience faith in ways that are meaningful and memorable.
Friends are encouraged to attend, making this a wonderful opportunity to invite another family to join the journey.
We believe that when children grow closer to God, they become lights in their homes, schools, and communities.

Made For More Than You Know

What if your gifts and talents are part of something bigger than you imagined?
Immeasurably More invites young adults into a conversation about God’s intentional design for their lives. Rooted in Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28, this gathering will explore how God uses our experiences, passions, abilities, and even our challenges to shape a life of purpose.
Through guided conversation, reflection, prayer, and community, participants will have an opportunity to consider how God may already be at work in and through them.
You do not need to have everything figured out. This gathering is designed to create space for honest conversation, encouragement, and exploration alongside others who are seeking to grow in faith and discover what God may be calling them toward.
Whether you’re asking questions about your future, looking for greater clarity, or simply wanting to connect with other young adults, there is room for you in the conversation.

Some of the most meaningful stories are the ones we almost never tell.
Maybe you’ve experienced God’s faithfulness during a difficult season. Maybe you’ve seen Him answer a quiet prayer, restore a relationship, or gently lead you somewhere you never expected. Those moments matter, and they may be exactly what someone else needs to hear.
Storytelling for the Soul Again! is a welcoming, two-evening workshop on Thursday, August 13 and Thursday, August 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, created to help participants identify a story from their own lives and develop it into a devotional for Volume 2 of SBCC’s Threads of Grace.
You don’t have to consider yourself a writer. This workshop is designed to encourage and support people at every experience level. Through practical guidance, thoughtful conversation, and a caring community, you’ll discover that sharing your story doesn’t require perfect words. It simply begins with God’s faithfulness in your life.
Together we’ll reflect, write, encourage one another, and celebrate the ways God continues to work through ordinary people every day.
Come discover the story God has been writing in your life and share a thread of His grace that could strengthen someone else’s faith.

Good Music. Good People. A Great Afternoon.
Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen after the service ends.
The SBCC Jazz Fest is an opportunity to linger a little longer, meet someone new, reconnect with familiar faces, and enjoy a relaxed afternoon together as a church family and community.
Join us on Sunday, August 23, immediately following worship at 12:00 PM, for live jazz, great food, games for all ages, and a school supply giveaway that blesses local students and families as a new school year begins.
This event also serves as Friend Day, making it the perfect Sunday to invite a neighbor, coworker, friend, or family member to worship with you before enjoying the festival together.
Feel free to bring your own lawn chair and favorite games, whether that’s cards, dominoes, or a board game, and make yourself at home.
Interested in getting involved?
Vendor and informational tables are available for those who would like to sell a product, promote a business, or share a cause with the community.
We’re also looking for volunteers to help create a welcoming experience throughout the day.
Whether you stay for thirty minutes or the whole afternoon, we hope you’ll leave encouraged, connected, and reminded that community is one of God’s greatest gifts.

More Than a Book Club
Sometimes spiritual growth begins with a conversation.
Sometimes it begins with a story.
The SBCC Book Club is a welcoming community of readers seeking a deeper, more courageous discipleship. Together, we’ll explore Black Joy by Tracey Michae’l Lewis-Giggetts, a powerful collection of essays celebrating resilience, creativity, healing, and the sacred beauty of Black life. Rather than looking away from difficult realities, this book invites us to discover joy as a source of hope, restoration, and faithful witness.
Meeting Wednesdays from July 15 through September 2, 7:00 to 8:30 PM, we’ll gather virtually on Zoom to read, reflect, and engage in honest conversations shaped by grace and curiosity. Whether you’ve been part of a book club before or this is your first time, you’ll find a space where questions are welcome, different perspectives are valued, and everyone can grow together.
Facilitated by Tony DeGruy, Cheryl French, Darlene Green, Sam White, Andrea Smith, and Jackie Cox, each session connects thoughtful reading with Scripture and practical discipleship, helping us better understand God’s heart for justice and how we can faithfully love our neighbors.
Together we’ll connect with God, grow as a community, and discover ways our faith can make a meaningful difference beyond the pages of a book.

Body, Mind and Spirit Retreat
Sometimes growth doesn’t happen by doing more. Sometimes it begins by creating space to notice where God is already at work.
Our Body, Mind and Spirit Retreat is the culminating experience of our Be Strong and Courageous in Body, Mind, and Spirit journey.
From August 31 at 1:00 PM through September 1 at 4:00 PM, we’ll step away from the pace of everyday life and enter a restorative space at San Damiano Retreat Center designed to help us experience God’s care for the whole person.
Throughout the retreat, you’ll engage in practical teaching on physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, with special relevance for seniors while remaining meaningful for adults of every age. You’ll experience prayer, Scripture, reflection, embodied practices such as movement, breath, rest, and posture, along with opportunities for both community and personal solitude. Together we’ll return to a simple Body, Mind, and Spirit Inventory that helps us prayerfully notice where God is inviting care, trust, and courage in this season of life.
Whether you’re feeling weary, seeking direction, or simply longing to deepen your walk with Christ, this retreat offers a thoughtful environment to listen, reflect, and grow alongside others pursuing the same journey.
Registration is required, and space is limited.
We invite you to set aside these two days, make room for God’s renewing work, and experience what it means to grow stronger in body, mind, and spirit together.

Circle of Friends – Wounded Women of the Bible
Finding Hope When Life Hurts
Life leaves its mark—through relationships, loss, mistakes, or seasons of feeling unseen. But God specializes in healing hearts and restoring hope.
Beginning September 8, Circle of Friends meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays at 7 PM for a powerful Bible study: Wounded Women of the Bible. This study takes us through the real-life stories of women from Scripture—Bathsheba, Hagar, Martha, and others—who faced abuse, loneliness, betrayal, loss, and much more.
If you’ve ever thought women played little role in the Bible—or had little to teach today’s woman—you’re in for a surprise. Their struggles mirror our own, and their journeys reveal God’s unchanging love and power to restore.
Each participant will encounter this book differently, returning to it at various points in her faith and life journey. Whether you are seeking healing, longing for deeper connection, or simply want to grow in God’s Word, you’ll find encouragement and renewal here.
Circle of Friends is more than a study. It’s a safe, welcoming community where women connect with God, grow in faith, and lift each other up.

Chances are, you know what it feels like to begin something new and hope you have what you need to succeed.
For many students and families across Alameda County, the start of a new school year can bring both excitement and financial pressure. Basic school supplies that many of us take for granted can become a significant challenge for households already stretching every dollar.
That's why South Bay Community Church is partnering with Berkeley Youth Alternatives (BYA) for their annual Backpack Drive from July 9 through August 6.
For more than 50 years, BYA has served underserved children and families through educational, health, wellness, and career development programs. The supplies collected through this drive will be distributed during BYA's community-wide Back2School Block Party on the first day of school and will continue supporting students through after-school programs throughout the year.
This is an opportunity to do more than donate supplies. It's an opportunity to encourage a child, support a family, and invest in a student's future.
Every notebook, backpack, folder, and pack of pencils helps create a stronger foundation for learning and growth.
Together, we can help students walk into the school year feeling prepared, confident, and supported by a community that cares.

Make a Difference: Volunteer to Cook and Serve at Abode Every Second Saturday!
Join us in extending care and compassion to those in need by participating in our monthly event at Abode. Held every second Saturday, this initiative provides an opportunity to cook and serve meals while fostering a spirit of kindness and community. Your involvement can help bring warmth and hope to those facing challenging times.
Together, we can provide more than just meals—we can offer support, connection, and encouragement to those who need it most.

Discovery Shop is a ministry of South Bay Community Church dedicated to serving individuals and families in need through gently used clothing and basic household items. Rooted in our mission to change the world, this ministry offers a simple yet meaningful way to extend compassion, dignity, and care to our community.
By participating in Discovery Shop, our congregation helps meet real, everyday needs while living out our faith in action. This ministry reminds us that generosity is more than a gesture. It is a response to God’s call to love our neighbors in practical and tangible ways.
There is an ongoing need for winter items, including male and female socks, walking shoes, coats, sweaters, and similar essentials. Donations can be placed in the designated bins located in the church lobby.
Discovery Shop also serves as a resource for those looking to support others they know who are experiencing hardship. Congregants who wish to retrieve items from the shop to share with the underserved are encouraged to connect with Denise Churchill using the contact information available in the Elexio app.
